The culture is the channel
TikTok is plumbing. Trust is the distribution system. Here is the theory — and what to put in the brief this week.

Most Hispanic marketing still treats culture as a theme you pour into a pipe. Spanish VO. A guitar in the edit. Cinco on the calendar. The pipe is TV, Meta, a celebrity. Culture is the paint.
That model assumes the pipe is neutral and the audience is at the other end, waiting. They are not. They are already in a conversation that does not need your ad.
The culture is the channel. Not a metaphor. A media plan.
TikTok is plumbing. The cousin, the group chat, the bilingual host in a real kitchen, the nano in Houston who answers comments in two languages — that is the medium. What you say only lands if it arrives from inside a relationship that already exists.
We don’t talk about culture. We speak from it. This is what that means when you have to ship.
Transmission is the wrong physics
The old model is a message traveling down a wire: brand → media → mass. Paint the wire Hispanic and you call it a market entry.
Hispanic purchase still leans recommendation, a multi-gen cart, someone they already believe. Ideas do not go billboard → household. They go billboard → a person in the room → the house. Skip the person and you bought a translation.
Call it two-step flow if you need a slide. Call it Sunday if you actually live it. Communication here is ritual — comida, a quince, a remittance, a match, a payday — not an interruption you paid to insert.
A general-market spot “run in Spanish” is encoded in one world and decoded in another. They read it as a costume. Encoding from the room is the only reading that converts.
Culture-as-segment is a targeting error
“Hispanic 18–34” is not a channel. It is a leftover from when the demo was the strategy.
Culture-as-segment says: same media plan, different language toggle, a burst in May and a nod in September. Culture-as-channel says: who they already believe *is* the inventory. You are not renting Hispanic attention. You are entering a trust network that will spit you out if you arrive as a translation.
Mexican-American Houston is not Dominican Washington Heights is not Cuban Miami. First-gen and second-gen can share a WhatsApp and still need different cuts. Spanish-dominant and English-first are not a toggle. They are different rooms.
Name the room before you name the platform. If you cannot fill four lines — origin, city, language mix, how we actually live the week — you are not ready to hire anyone.
What this forbids
Do not translate last quarter’s Super Bowl ad. That is transmission with a new VO.
Do not start the plan with a celebrity and hope it converts. A billboard is not a cousin. A beauty creator with 50,000 people who already believe her will move more product than a famous face holding the same bottle. They know she would say if it was mid.
Do not visit twice a year and call it presence. A channel you show up to for Cinco and Heritage Month is not a channel. It is a guest appearance.
Do not let legal sand the accent off the cut. If the piece sounds like a deck, you are back in the pipe. Brand-safe is claims and cannot-says. It is not bland.
What to do this week
Write the four lines. Then buy the relationship, not the graph.
- Micro and nano for conversion, UGC, city-level work. The food creator who owns Houston lunch-break For You is the Houston buy.
- Mid when you need a proof point upstairs.
- Macro only for a spike you can name: a launch, a match, a national moment.
Let the creator write the first pass. You write guardrails — claims, logos, what you cannot say — not the cadence of the joke. Shoot in a real kitchen, a real street, their actual bathroom. Storyboard a Reel like a 30-second TVC and you have already left the channel.
Put usage and Spark in the SOW. A relationship you cannot run for 90 days was a rental.
Stay in the year. Nochebuena, Posadas, Reyes, back-to-school for a multi-gen house, a quince, a payday, a Sunday. You do not need every holiday. You need to be useful on the weeks they spend.
Measure the house, not the pipe: saves, a comment that sounds like a buying question, SKU lift in the DMA you briefed, a page that works in both languages. If Hispanic “underperformed,” look at the message and the mix before you look at the demo. The demo did not fail you. The work never got in the room.
The operational test
When the cut ships, ask one question: would this exist if the brand were not paying?
If yes — if it sounds like their Stories on a Wednesday, if the comments already use that language, if a cousin would forward it — you used the channel.
If no — if it needed a jalapeño, a guitar, a VO swap to feel “Hispanic” — you used culture as paint.
$4.1 trillion is not a reason to buy more pipe. It is a reason to enter the network that already moves the money.
Don’t send a message to the room. Create it with the people who define it.
Bring the four lines. We’ll bring the people already in the conversation.
